Green Mango Rice (Mavinakayi Chitranna)

This authentic Indian recipe is a super delicious option for a meal. It is normally prepared during the mango season and mostly during festivals. It is one of our favourite family recipes.


INGREDIENTS:

  • Green Mango / Raw unripened mango – 1 (grated)
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
  • Peanuts – 1/4 cup
  • Split Black gram (Urad Dal) – 1 tsp
  • Split Chickpea (Channa Dal) – 1 tsp
  • Cilantro – 1 cup (chopped)
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • White Rice – 1 cup

For Grinding

  • Green Chillis – 2
  • Fresh Coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Ginger – 1 inch
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida – a pinch

METHOD:

  1. Grind all the ingredients mentioned in the grinding section in a blender without adding water.
  2. Heat a pan on medium flame and add oil to it.
  3. Once the oil is heated, add mustard seeds and let it splutter for a second.
  4. Add peanuts, turmeric, channa dal & urad dal and fry till they turn golden.
  5. Add grated green mango, salt and the ground mixture and mix well.
  6. Let it cook for 5- 10mins till mango is cooked well.
  7. This will form a paste consistency which is mixed with hot cooked rice.
  8. Garnish with cilantro and enjoy the delicious Green Mango rice!
